From Brazil to NZ: The Document Traps That Delay Visa Applications

Most Brazilians preparing a New Zealand visa application worry about the big questions — the job, the visa category, the eligibility rules. But applications far more often lose time on something smaller and more avoidable: the documents. The requirements aren't complicated on the surface, which is exactly why the traps in them catch people out. Here are the ones that cause the most delay.

The police certificate trap

For longer stays and for residence, you'll generally need a police certificate proving your character — and this is one of the most common sources of delay. The catch isn't just getting your Brazilian certificate; it's understanding when it's required, which countries you need one from (not only Brazil, if you've lived elsewhere), and how recent it has to be. Certificates that are too old by the time your application is assessed, or missing for a country you lived in years ago, send applications straight into delay. Because these take time to obtain from overseas, starting late is the classic mistake.

The translation trap

New Zealand needs your documents in English, and not just any translation will do — certain documents must be accompanied by certified English translations. Brazilians frequently underestimate this, assuming a casual translation is fine or that a document in Portuguese will be accepted as-is. It won't. A translation that isn't done and presented correctly can be rejected, meaning you pay again and wait again. Every document that isn't originally in English is a potential trip-wire here.

The medical trap

Depending on how long you intend to stay, you may need a medical examination, a chest X-ray, or both — completed by a doctor approved by Immigration New Zealand, not just any clinic. There are timing rules too: medical evidence has to be recent when it reaches Immigration New Zealand. People who book the wrong provider, or complete their medical too early, can find the results don't count when they need them to.

The identity trap

This one sounds trivial and causes real damage. Your details have to match your passport exactly — names, dates, spellings. Brazilian naming conventions, accents, and the way names appear across different documents can create mismatches that look minor but flag your application, delay it, or in some cases cause bigger problems. Consistency across every document matters more than people expect.

Why the order matters

The deeper trap is sequence. Police certificates, translations, medicals, and your visa timeline all interlock, and doing them in the wrong order — or starting the slow ones too late — is what turns a manageable process into a months-long one.
